Digital imaging tools have been in and out of hospital labs for 20 years. Until now, in order to deliver practical processing times such systems have located and imaged individual cells important to each application. This method places inherent limits on the utility of these tools in daily production use. At NextSlide, we believe that a new approach is required to transform microscopy in lab medicine.
NextSlide uses general-purpose slide scanners to create full-resolution digital images of the reviewed portion of each smear , not just individual cells. This baseline image is a true functional replacement for the glass slide. Our system can image any slide review in your lab that requires 100x optics. CBC smear review is the largest application, but NextSlide can also image low-volume applications in hematology like LAP and Kleihauer-Betke, as well as common applications in microbiology like gram stains.
Servers in our datacenter take the smear images and run them through image processing algorithms tailored for specific applications. Our software does the tedious work of hunting for and counting cells, and allows the reviewers to use their skills on morphology and classification. On a WBC differential count, as an example, the application finds and pre-classifies 100 white cells. On Kleihauer-Betke the system identifies red cells, isolates the fetal cells, and makes the proportional count.
The reviewer accesses each case using a Web-based workflow, also designed for each application. The clinical skills of the reviewer are required to confirm the cell classification, score morphology, and to complete the review. The processed case is completed in much less time than with a manual microscope. Because the baseline smear image is available, the reviewer can be thorough without having to go back to the glass slide.
We've built NextSlide "in the cloud" so it is simple for you to implement and for us to support. We handle all the LIS interfaces via our data center, and lab staff and physicians can do the work anywhere because the system is entirely browser-based. Compliance and audit is simplified with our Certify tools for training and proficiency testing, all using your own slides.
